It appears the eyeshields were carried by all troops as part of their gas protection measures, in N.Africa, the SLM goggles were also carried as ‘anti-dust goggles’. The situation was rectified in 1943 when it was authorized that the acetate eyeshields could also be used as dust shields and the relatively expensive little brass SLM’s were no longer issued.
